My Friends, by Taro Gomi

Along with Page, Priya anchors the collaborative. To her role as co-director of Oakland Starting Smart and Strong, Priya brings passion for a more just world, and a strong belief in the power of community and collective solutions. She uses her planning expertise, adaptive leadership style, and compassion to break down silos and build authentic relationships while bringing together varying perspectives to support children, families and communities.

Before joining Oakland Starting Smart and Strong, Priya held a variety of roles at the City of Oakland’s Human Services Department, including managing the City’s violence prevention investments and planning Head Start child development and family services.

Prior to her work with the City, Priya worked for nonprofit agencies in Oakland and San Francisco. She has a strong commitment to the equitable distribution of resources throughout the community, and supporting high quality programs and strategies serving children and families. She currently serves as a member of the City of Oakland Children's Initiative Oversight Commission and BANANAS, Inc Board of Directors.

Priya has a master’s degree in Public Health from UC Berkeley and a bachelor’s degree from UCLA. She was born in India, raised in New Jersey and California, and has lived in the Bay Area the last 25 years. She feels lucky to be part of the Bay Area community, with her partner and two daughters who keep her busy, tired and happy.
