HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT

Healthy children are better prepared for school and for life. Oakland Starting Smart and Strong is working to ensure that young children are screened for developmental, social and cognitive needs, and that necessary services are provided to meet those needs.

What we’re aiming for:

Children birth to 5 with developmental, vision and hearing needs receive appropriate interventions
Families have what they need to support their child’s health, development and well-being

Steps we’re taking:

Implementing a universal screening process in Oakland Unified School District in partnership with Help Me Grow and First 5 Alameda
Addressing language and cultural barriers to screening and assessment
Implementing vision and hearing screenings across all OUSD preschool classrooms
